The Irishness of Oscar Wilde
The beauty of Wilde’s poetry and prose, the charm of his witty conversation and dramatic dialogue belong to the tradition of the Celtic Twilight as much as that of any other Irish author. But how much was he merely ‘an Irishman abroad’?
Owen Dudley Edwards was born in Dublin and educated at the Jesuit Belvedere College and University College Dublin. He has taught at a number of universities, mostly in the USA, and is currently Reader in History at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author and editor of many books, including The Fireworks of Oscar Wilde (1989), and is an expert on the Sherlock Holmes stories. He has also edited the Collins Complete Works of Oscar Wilde and a volume on the writings by and about Wilde in prison, to be published by Penguin in 2001.
